Pruning vs Trimming

Trimming is generally reactive (trimming a branch which is storm-damaged or has grown over the house). Pruning is the pro-active act of cutting certain branches to guide the growth of a tree. Generally, a tree is pruned to foster healthy branches by removing competition, promote a certain shape or to maintain a certain height or thickness of the canopy.

Whether you need pruning or trimming, trust the experts at Clemmons Tree Care to work safely, with the utmost care and respect for your property and landscaping. We cut only small sections at a time, typically lowering heavier pieces to the ground with ropes to prevent damage. Any waste larger than a few leaves will be hauled away unless you’ve requested otherwise.

Clemmons Tree Care offers stump grinding services in the Charleston SC, Mt. Pleasant, and Summerville areas. Stump grinding requires heavy equipment, so we take extra precautions to avoid tearing up your yard getting the equipment in place. Stumps are ground, on average 6-10 inches below grade. Typically, the chips and sawdust are lightly raked back into the hole as a filler, which will naturally break down over time, returning nutrients to the soil.

Can my tree be saved?

We often get calls from people who have noticed changes on one of their trees. From insects and disease to storm damage, there are many things which can put a tree at risk. Below are some common signs which indicate a tree may need to be examined:

  • Partial or total leaf loss
  • Leaf discoloration
  • Leaf damage
  • Bark discoloration
  • Fungus or other foreign growth
  • Insect colonies
  • Cracks, splits or splintering

Only an onsite consultation with an arborist can determine if the tree can be saved, the extent of damage and the proper course of treatment. Clemmons Tree Care is experienced with indigenous species such as our majestic Live Oaks, Magnolias, Palmettos, Wax Myrtles and Cypresses, as well as the diverse range of ornamentals found throughout the Lowcountry, such as the Crepe Myrtle, Red Bud, Dogwood, Japanese Maples, Cherry and more.

A Green Approach

If you’ve ever had to cut down a tree, you know it produces a lot of waste. Rather than simply haul it to the dump, we re-purpose the wood:

  • Dry wood chips become mulch
  • Small limbs become firewood
  • Larger pieces are turned into our custom, hand-made furniture!

rose

From homes & furniture to paper, medicine and food, humans have been using trees as a raw material for almost our entire recorded history. It makes sense, therefore, to stop throwing away these reusable resources. Surprisingly, most trees which are cut down end up in a landfill. The larger sections often can’t be shredded, and they make up the largest mass of a tree. They are also the right size to be used for furniture.

Clemmons Tree Care owner Jamie Clemmons has been repurposing trees into furniture for over five years. It is often sad to cut down some of the large and ancient trees we have in the lowcountry. By making them into furniture, their history is preserved.

We sell off the shelf designs, as well as customize pieces from one of your trees.
